On May 17, Ismael Fattahi, Iran’s Labor Movement Activist, in his article “On the Importance of The Day Against Homophobia” posted on IRQO website, wrote that it is indeed important to fight homophobia within Iran’s civil movements. He elaborated on the Penal Code and punishments embedded in Sharia law against individual gays and lesbians in Iran, and pointed out to its outcome in society. He then explains further that at present, what is most important is to work towards reforms in relevant laws -penal code and family law- raising awareness aimed at activists of various civil movements, and working towards adjusting of cultural norms with the universal human rights. He warns that because homosexuality is considered obscene, civil activists inside Iran, so far, haven’t welcomed writing and talking about LGBT rights.
